The Room of One
Three religions. One Room.
A religious version for Airports
Professor Dr. Idris Nassery from the University in Paderborn is the keynote speaker on Thursday, September 26, at 2:30 pm. It is a great pleasure to have him - at least online - for this conference, because he is strongly involved in the conception and the realization of the "House of One" in Berlin and other cities in Germany.
ABSTRACT: In today's world, there is an urgent need for places of peace - spaces where we can learn to coexist in our "one world house", as Martin Luther King eloquently put it in Berlin. Among the various space we inhabit, few are as representative of encountres between different cultures and nations as the airport. At this transitory hub, encountres and oppurtunities for exchange emerge, often surpassing those found even in specialized professional circles. Within the framwork of the presentation, the concept of a "Room of One" will be introduced, followed by a discussion on the prerequisites for its realization. Special attention will be given to the theological foundational concepts essential for the implementation of this endeavor.
Idris Nassery is a Professor of Islamic Law at the University of Paderborn. His scholarly endeavors transcend conventional realms of Islamic law, encompassing innovative fields such as Islamic legal philosophy and legal aesthetics. Through his research, he enriches the understanding and discourse surrounding intricate subjects like legal theories and their aesthetic dimensions within Islam. Moreover, he delves into Comparative Theology, exploring how the methodologies of Comparative Theology can be integrated into practical applications. Additionally, Nassery places particular emphasis on examining the legal landscape of Afghanistan, spanning historical and contemporary contexts, thus offering valuable insights into the country's legal evolution and practices.

Frankfurt
At first glance, Frankfurt is a business city in the centre of Germany: home to the European Central Bank, headquarter of domestic and foreign credit institutions, as well as the location of important trade fairs such as the world's largest book fair. High-rise buildings characterise the skyline, which is a distinctive feature in Germany. Also the city is home to Europe's fifth-largest airport (by passenger numbers) and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024 - Frankfurt!
Frankfurt is a very cosmopolitan, international city - 175 of the world's 195 countries are represented in its population. It is culturally diverse, green and centrally located on the River Main. Since 2018, the medieval old town, which was destroyed in the Second World War, has been reconstructed as the "New Frankfurt Old Town".
Heidelberg
90 kilometres south of Frankfurt, Heidelberg is situated on the romantic Neckar river. The city is known for its baroque old town, one of the oldest universities in Germany with a lively student scene and a venerable castle ruin from the 13th century, which towers over the city. The extensive grounds are best explored on a guided tour. From the castle terrace you can enjoy marvellous views of the Neckar river, the old town and the surrounding low mountain range. Heidelberg's flair has already inspired Goethe, the British painter William Turner and the American writer Mark Twain - and certainly us, too, during our visit.
Rüdesheim and the romantic Rhine river valley
The start and finish of our day trip is Rüdesheim, 60 kilometres west of Frankfurt, the "capital" of the Rheingau wine-growing region and famous for its fine Riesling wines. The town's most important sight is the narrow Drosselgasse. Sometimes packed with tourists, it is home to cosy restaurants and souvenir shops.
From Rüdesheim we set off on a five-hour boat trip (return journey Rüdesheim - St. Goarshausen - Rüdesheim) to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 (https://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/en/). The Middle Rhine Valley is one of Germany's most popular visitor destinations with its romantic and wild landscape, idyllic places on rugged cliffs, its castles and ruins, as well as the dramatic meander of the Rhine at the Loreley Rock. Let us be enchanted & impressed!
